1st XI
Having spent the morning watching the rain fall out at Casey fields, the Melbourne Uni 1st XI fielded first in a 29 over match against The Swans, who boasted a full strength line-up including the in form Victorian and Australian players. Greg Kennedy continued his fine season with the new ball returning figures of 2/17 from his 6 overs which included 3 maidens. Nick Ellsmore was tidy in the face of some high quality batting while Michael Nalesnyik bowled superbly, taking three wickets including the key scalp of Australian wicket keeper Matthew Wade who was well caught by MUCC debutant Elias ‘Fonz’ Karageorgiou. Brett Harrop and Mark Simpson produced excellent spells at the death to restrict Casey to 9/164 from their allotment.
Following their inspired promotion to the top of the order Michael Nalesnyik and Jarrod Martignago proved more than just a mouthful for Casey’s highly fancied attack. The pair blasted 43 of the first 7 overs before Nalesnyik was trapped in front for 23, having provided an excellent platform for the middle order. Captain Jarrod Legget then joined Martignago to take MUCC to 71 before the diminutive wicketkeeper was dismissed for a well compiled 32. From that point Uni finished the game at a canter with Scott Sanders joining the captain to put on an unbeaten 94 run stand for the third wicket leading MUCC to an 8 wicket win. Scott’ sparkling innings of 63 and Jarrod’s well compiled 44 put the pair in good form leading into a busy schedule of cricket before the festive season which should see MUCC rocket up the club championship.
